World's smallest camera claimed

OK, so it's a really cute, fully functional digital camera. But would you use it? And at what point is a camera too small?

The camera in question, from novelty retailer Hammacher Schlemmer, is slightly larger than a cubic inch (1.125 inches by 1 inch by 1.063 inches) and weighs half an ounce. The company claims it's the world's smallest digital camera.

Being so very small it's probably easy to lose, despite the included wrist lanyard. It's small enough to be a choking hazard for toddlers and pets. Another cause for hesitation is its $99.95 price tag.

It's a real camera though. It takes 1,600x1,200 JPEG stills and 640x480 30-frames-per-second AVI video, which it stores on a microSD card. It comes with a 2GB card. It also includes a USB cable so you can view images and video on a Windows computer. The camera's battery lasts 30 minutes and charges in an hour via the USB cable.

Any claim to have the world's smallest anything should be taken with a large grain of salt. This claim is close, though. The Chobi Mini Digital Camera can also make a convincing case for the smallest camera. Measuring 1.7 inches by 1.1 inches by less than half an inch, the Chobi Mini is smaller by volume than the Hammacher Schlemmer camera. But the Hammacher Schlemmer camera's nearly cubic shape gives it a psychological advantage. It just seems smaller.

In practical terms, if I were to spring for one of these Lilliputian cameras I would lean toward the Chobi Mini. The rectangular shape makes it easier to hold, and the Chobi Mini takes higher-resolution stills and video.

If you know of any other contenders for the title of world's smallest camera, tell us in comments.

iPhone 5 to debut Oct. 4, ATD says

Apple will debut its iPhone 5 on October 4, with new Chief Executive Tim Cook leading the show, All Things Digital reported today.

The report, citing unnamed sources close to the situation, said the new iPhone itself would go on sale "within a few weeks" of the announcement.

Rumors have swirled for months about when exactly the new iPhone would arrive, with October looking increasingly likely.

The iPhone 5 carries tremendous significance for Apple. The company faces mounting pressure from the Android realm, with a confusing array of budget-minded and high-end models, but Apple chooses to put many its eggs in many fewer baskets. That's worked out well for the iPhone 4, though, which has attained mainstream success.

The iPhone 4 has held up well under the competitive pressure. But with the breakneck pace of the smartphone market bringing higher-speed LTE networks, larger displays, NFC payments, and other features, Apple's flagship phone is starting to look a bit long in the tooth.

The iPhone is important for many other companies besides Apple. Manufacturer Foxconn is said to be making 150,000 iPhone 5 models a day. Accessory makers, too, are champing at the bit, as exhibited by Case-Mate's premature publication of apparent iPhone 5 cases.

What Is Time?

Did you know?

The word "calendar" comes from the Roman word, "Calends", which was the name of the account book, the book recording monthly debts and bills to be paid?
Time isn't money?

You must begin this study by asking yourself the question: What is time? How many perceptions of time can there be? Is time culturally relative or is there an absolute time? How do instruments of time measurement condition how we think about time and reality? Consider the following excerpt from A Treatise on Time (1996), V.V.

"Just as air is the atmosphere of the body, so time is the atmosphere of the mind. If the time in which we live consists of uneven months and days regulated by mechanized minutes and hours, that is what becomes of our mind: a mechanized irregularity. Since everything follows from the mind, it is no wonder that the atmosphere in which we live daily becomes more polluted, and the greatest complaint is: "I just don't have enough time!" Who owns your time, owns your mind. Own your own mind and you will know your own mind."

LG launches Optimus 3D and Optimus Pad

BARCELONA--LG had already promised that they were coming, but the company waited until the first morning of Mobile World Congress here to officially unveil the Optimus 3D and Optimus Pad. Both Android devices run on Gingerbread (aka Android 3.0) and offer 3D video recording.

The Optimus 3D smartphone builds on the Optimus 2x and Optimus Black that LG announced last month at CES. You'll find a similar design candy bar design in basic black. The 4.3-inch display takes up the most real estate, but four touch navigation elements sit just below.

LG was quick to point out the Optimus 3D's "tri-dual' configuration, which includes a 1GHz dual-core processor, dual-channel and dual-memory architecture. And just as important, the company said the handset can record, view and share 3D content. We're still not sure what to think of this concept, but we'll get a better demonstration of the technology later today.

To record 3D, the Optimus two 5.0-megapixel cameras on its back side; you won't need glasses to watch recorded video, and a 3D "Hot Key" will deliver five 3D-dedicated user interfaces. Video resolution is up to 1080p for 2D clips and up to 720p for 3D.

Other features include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a personal organizer, USB syncing and mass storage, GPS, a music player, 8GB of internal memory, a 1,500 mAh battery, and support DLNA/HDMI connections. The LG Optimus 3D will start a global roll out in Europe in the second quarter of this year.

The Optimus Pad marks LG's entry into the tablet space. It also features 3D recording and video capability (and the two 5-megapixel cameras), but LG appeared to more concerned with promoting the convenience of the tablet's 8.9-inch display. Calling it the "optimal size" for a tablet, a company exec drove the point home by ripping on competing devices (without mentioning them by name) that are smaller (like the Galaxy Tab) and larger (the iPad, the Motorola Xoom, and the new Galaxy Tab 10.1).

While the smaller tablets are just "blown up smartphones," the exec said, the larger tablets are too bulky to be portable. He even showed photos of frustrated users either madly pecking at a tiny screen or being overwhelmed by a large device. Yes, they oversimplified things a but, but that's marketing for you.

The display has a 1280x768 WXGA resolution in widescreen while a 1GHz dual core Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor the Optimus Pad from the inside. You also get 1080p HD video decoding and HDMI support will let you share your 3D video with TVs. And as part of the Optimus Pad announcement, LG has a established a partnership with YouTube, which will let Optimus Pad owners quickly upload 3D videos for sharing.

The Optimus Pad will begin shipping in March to select markets.

ZTE Skate bakes in Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Those of you hungry for Android 2.3 Gingerbread on more than just the Nexus S will soon get a taste with the ZTE Skate.

The Skate--announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today--will have a large, 4.3-inch touch screen (qualifying it as a "jumbo phone," according to HP). However, its 800MHz processor and 5-megapixel camera make it more midlevel than premium. Also onboard is an Adreno 200 GPU.

ZTE credits the skateboard for its inspiration on its 4.2-ounce 3G candy-bar-style handset.

The Skate is expected to globally launch beginning May 2011.

Fujitsu introduces the first MeeGo Netbook

Nokia’s new focus on Windows Phone 7 might mean that there is less emphasis and support for MeeGo in the future, but that doesn’t mean that the platform is dead. Now the first netbook to be preinstalled with MeeGo has arrived in Singapore, thanks to Fujitsu. The LifeBook MH330 has pretty standard netbook specifications, such as a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 processor, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive, and a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 pixel LED display. Fujitsu claims that it has customized the MeeGo installation to take advantage of the hardware buttons, though it remains to be seen if MeeGo netbooks will take off.

Will Google or Facebook buy Twitter?

Google and Facebook in addition to other companies are in talks of taking over Twitter at a whooping price of $10 billion, trusted sources reported.

Twitter last December had raised $200 million in financing in deal which was valued at $3.7 billion. The talks with twitter though are at a “low level”, with Facebook and Google.

The popular website, allows users to flash 140 character messages to a group of followers; currently the website has 175 million users.

None of the parties rumored doing the deal have commented on the news yet.

Twitter though reportedly is not looking at a sellout; instead it is working on building a big independent organization.

The social networking site did not allow any advertisements on its site, but growing competition and need for revenue must have pushed it to give advertisements space on its site.

Twitter doesn't disclose financial information but research shows that it generated an estimated $45 million from advertising in 2010 and is expected to garner close to $150 million in 2011.

The site falls in league with popular social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, Zynga etc.

Nokia leaves Meego in the middle of the lurch

Nokia has dropped its idea of launching a new smartphone based on the operating system Meego, sources reported. The possibility of Nokia switching over to some other operating system increased as the rumors were doing the rounds for some time now, sources informed.

Nokia does not see Meego’s inclusion in its smartphones a win-win strategy, which would imply that there would be only one Meego product in the market by end of 2011.

Meego was created only last year in a joint collaboration of Nokia and Intel. And at that time Nokia was placing high bets on Meego to battle their way through the high-end smartphone market, sources stated.

There are high chances of Nokia to adopt Microsoft’s Windows 7 or Google’s Android.

The largest mobile maker in numbers has witnessed a loss in its market share due to the advent of new players like Apple and Google who came well equipped with their handsome range of tablets and smartphones.

Nokia here completely missed the bus.

Is a less expensive iPhone prototype around the corner?

Apple Inc has a less expensive iPhone in the pipeline, as it is now getting more competition from cheaper range of smartphones, sources reported. The new iPhone which is being worked upon will be one third the size of the iPhone 4, sources informed, which iPhone is planning to sell for $200 but the two year wireless contract will be missing. The launch of this phone is very dicey this year, as speculations are rife that it may get unveiled in the middle of this year or it may get cancelled altogether.

Apple has a history of developing products and then eventually not bringing them into the markets.

The manufacturer of the iPad and iPhone though did not confirm its status on the new iPhone, sources stated.

Apple reportedly is also in the process of developing a dual mode phone which shall be able to work with the world’s two main wireless standards.

If Apple brings in a cheaper iPhone prototype it will have chances of capturing a lower level of market segment, giving an impetus to their present giant status.

Facebook employees may cash in on company's success

Facebook employees may soon get a chance to sell up to $1 billion of their shares to institutional investors, sources informed. The share prices are worth $60 billion to the company, trusted sources added.

The world’s largest social network is thinking about the prospective after it has received numerous pitches to acquire the firm’s shares, sources stated.

Mark Zuckerberg’s company only last month received an investment of $1.5 billion giving the company a valuation of $50 billion.

Facebook is playing with the idea of going public around 2012, as the company’s value is ever increasing.

After the rumors of the form going public, investors became more interested in vesting in the stocks of Facebook. This has led to capitalists and ex employees to sell their shares.

At present Facebook has a stringent rule for employees to not sell their sales on private exchanges, which makes it difficult for employees to benefit from the company.
